Dads attending for the birth –
Amusing article as linked below regarding Dads being present for the birth of their baby.
This is a very personal decision, and no rules should be applied to force either way!
In the many many births I have been present for in my 20 year midwifery career, by far the majority of men would not miss the occasion of the birth of their baby, and lovingly support their wife/partner in any way they can.
It is fair to say that some Dads can feel at a “loss” to know how to help when their loved one is in so much pain, but this too can be accentuated by being in hospital, which is not a “familiar” environment.
This has to one of the biggest plus points for home birthing – being in the relaxed environment of your own home, with the sense of the familiar, and having your baby born in your own “love nest”….great for calming the nerves etc!
What is key is preparation for the expectant couple and in my work as an Independent Midwife, I always make sure that my clients are fully aware of all the options regarding place of birth, as well as strategies for how to cope on the day of birthing.
I also attend with clients for their births and draw on my midwifery experience to support both the woman in labour, as well as the expectant Dad!
